In exile, Ovid wrote two poetry collections, Tristia and Epistulae ex Ponto, which illustrated his sadness and desolation.Being far from Rome, he had no access to libraries, and thus might have been forced to abandon his Fasti, a poem about the Roman calendar, of which only the first six books exist – January through June.
Oxenstierna assisted as secretaries Jerome's translation into Latin from the Hebrew and Greek of the Vulgate Bible. The five books of the elegiac Tristia, a series of poems expressing Ovid is a poet much more interested in poetry than any other topic, and this can irritate some readers. (I rather like it, needless to say.) One thing that he’s doing in both Fasti and Metamorphoses is playing with conventional literary categories.Fasti is an “elegiac” poem in the metre of that name (associated with love poetry), while Metamorphoses is an epic in heroic metre (like the 2005-08-01 An Outline of Ovid’s Fasti, Books 1-4.
